Just tried those Hearos "rock n roll" plugs and...
what a pile of ****! they don't do anything whatsoever, sticking my fingers or earphones in my ears would be better...I know I put them in right, but they had absolutely no effect
I pulled the little round thing out from the middle and put it back in...does anyone know if I've wrecked them? - the instructions say "replace filter if needed" and "inserter not to be removed" - EH?! - its a rubber lump with a tiny plastic tube in the middle! (...the inserter? can anyone explain...?)
I'm tempted to try and get my money back on the warranty...

Are you talking about literally the "rock and roll" Hearos? Or are you talking about their hi fis? The hi fis are white with a blue plastic filter in the middle. I have no experience with the rock and roll series plugs, but from the looks of them, I thought they were just one piece of rubber.addylewis said:

My ER-20s arrived today, gave them a test with the old hifi, volumes that would previously leave my ears ringing (not that I ever stuck with them for long) are now perfectly pleasant. The only downside I see is that the plastic tubes sticking out of your ears look stupid but in a dark gig enviroment, who's gonna notice? Custom plugs are around £150 here, when you can pick up ER-20s for £8, I know they'll do for now. If I ever start frequent gigging and gig going to then I'll cough up for a set of customs. For a few gigs a month, the ER-20s look like they'll do fine, will give them a gig trial when I can.
What I find amazing about them is that they will make the loud concerts comfortable, and yet when I wear them in my car (muffler gone bad), it brings the noise down to a similar volume, despite the fact that my car is about 20 dB quieter than the typical concert.Aj* said:

Decibels are a relative measurement, so it cuts higher volumes exponentially eg a volume 0f "10" is cut to "5", and a volume of 4 is cut to 2. It's awesome!Dkerwood said:

I can vouch for the ER-20s. I've had mine for a little over a year now, and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! After a couple of gigs that left my ears ringing, I knew I had to do something. I treasure my hearing, and you don't get it back.
When you first get them they definitely take some getting used to. They're a little painful in that virgin ear canal! I noticed immediately a very comfortable reduction in the piercing highs that would always make me cringe. It is a little tough singing with them in, as you tend to hear yourself a lot more than everyone else. Again, just takes getting used to.
I no longer have ringing ears the next day and a splitting headache. Our lead guitarist bought some, and our drummer and lead singer asked me to get them some too. Hey, better late than never.

I've just got a question.. I usually wear earplugs, and don't play full volume at bands pracs (though sometimes real loud)..
Anywho, I had a problem with my left ear a little while ago after playing a bass in store (lol) where afterwards is was ringing and sometimes made strange noises. Went to a specialist and he said if it goes away, no biggie.
It did go away, but a couple weeks ago now at a gig, the sound on stage was pretty rank, but if I used earplugs all I could hear was a mess.. So i left one half out, the other in. Now in the ear that had a plug half out, i've had ringing since the gig. Definently noticable if i'm in a quiet area.
Does anyone know if it would be permanent?

Man, I hate those situations. I was there a few months ago, man. We were playing in what amounted to a concrete/metal warehouse with a TON of PA. Too. Bloody. Loud.popinfresh said:

Is your situation permanant? Hopefully not. You won't know until it goes away. I have periodic flashes where all sound fuzzes out and the ringing takes over for a few seconds in my left ear. PROTECT YOUR EARS, YOU DON'T GET ANOTHER SET. I only wish my sister would listen to me.
I carry a little case that contains several different earplugs with different ratings, from light attenuation to heavy. I've also gotten used to hearing even with the muddiness (it can be done, your ears adjust after a few minutes).
All of the ear plugs I have come across seem to knock all of the top off making it very difficult to do vocal harmonies. Anyone know of a good manufacturer who can supply quality ear plugs in the UK?
You'll be surprised how quickly your ear can adjust if given the chance. I use ear plugs most of the time at practice and some at gigs depending on where I have to stand. I find they help me
define my bass lines as we do use a lot of overdrive on some songs and the plugs take off the high end. I play with a remote so I can get away from the amps to some extent.

I too have done irreparable harm to my ears and have permanent tinitis. It pays to have the proper ear protection. I'm thankful that in spite of the hissing in my ears, I can still hear birds sing, wind in the trees, and since I do a lot of writing and arranging I'm glad that I can keep the level of my cans down.
due to ear infections and ear drum ruptures when i was born, i'm already 50% deaf, i think i should pick a pair up.
