Heil PR30 and Heil PR40 vs other mics

I'm going to be buying my first good mic sometime soon (I have some really old 1/4" jack Akai microphones that came with a reel-to-reel my dad bought WAY before I was born, one doesn't work any more, and the other is really static-y) and I'm seriously considering the Heil PR30 at the moment. I won't be doing any gigs with it, but keeping it at home, safe, doing my own recordings for purposes other than just my band. I was wondering if the PR30 is a good vocal-recording mic vs the PR40 and other mics you may have in mind. This will be my first higher-quality microphone, and I have about $700 in my bank account, which I'd like to keep at least half of.

With that information, what do ya'll think would best fit my situation, the PR30 or PR40 or some other mic? I only need ONE microphone, not multiple at the moment, at least until the summer and I can get more money then.

Are you looking for strictly a vocal mic, or are you looking to record any instruments, as well? For $300-$350, you can find some pretty good mics out there, depending on what you want to do with it. Studio Projects mics seem to be pretty well received, and definitely fall within that price range. You should be able to find a Rode or Shure around that range, as well as Oktava, AKG, CAD, etc. Do some searching over at Invalid Link Removed and you should be able to come up with a good choice.

I did a little snooping around, and it appears those two Heil
models are indeed very nice sounding, and quite versatile dynamic mics.

I found favorable comparisons to the Re-20, SM-7 and RCA ribbons.
(those 3 are very good mics for recording vocals and almost anything else)

in addition, my school's music director said it's better to go with name-brand mics than out of the way. For my price range he recommended AKG microphones, more specifically a studio pack from AKG.

Oh and my price range is going up, because I'm earning 'big' money this week.

Bob Heil IS a name in pro audio, and has been for decades. Not exactly "out of the way." And while AKG has made a number of superb and classic mics, just having the AKG name on a mic, by itself, doesn't mean it's automatically going to be better, especially down at those price ranges. Give the Heils some serious thought before you dismiss them, along with some of the other options mentioned.
