I would like to say hello to everyone. I have just started playing again, it's been 28 years since a bass was in my hands feels great, forgot what magic it instrument holds. It was good to find this forum a lot of insight, didn't have this in the 80's. So hi all and hope to grow here.

Hello all! Been a long time

Quite honestly, it is a strange story. I've played guitar for a while in my 20's and was in a band, but as I got older it went by the way side, until my wife this past summer bought me Sirius Xm radio. I thought cool I will listen to what I that was the music I enjoyed, such as the hair nation channel, and the 90's through the 2000's hard rock. Negative could not relive the past, then one day found the Jam On channel, WOW changed my life a lot of groove. I told the wife I wanted to play bass again, so got a cheap bass and amp off Craigfinder, and here I am. Just want to say the person who really push me back in the game was Erick "Jesus" Coomes of the band Lettuce, what a player. I do notice though the Jam bands do not get a lot of recognition on here. The bass players are amazing, and there improvisation skills are killer. Just my opinion though it always is about Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, Marcus Miller, and such. Why?
good story, and glad that your wife got you back to listening to music, and that lead you back to playing 
i don't think jam band bassists are as flashy or technical - really technical bassists ARE impressive, and there are soul and funk players who come up a lot here, too. you'll see a lot of mentions of james jamerson, duck dunn, steve harris, victor wooten and jaco hereabouts, as well as threads about carol kaye, bootsy, larry graham and lemmy come up a lot. as i write this, i keep thinking of more and more bass players who get talked about here. paul mccartney is often discussed.
it makes sense that a jam band player would be great at improv. can you recommend some more songs with great bass players to check out?

Well the Jam bands are really funky now, not like years ago. I really like these guys, because they hold the band together great in the pocket players. I'm not into flash just what to be the driving force behind the egos (LOL). I do like Steve Harris he is the reason I played bass as a teen in 1982.

As far as songs from Jam bands don't know names, but listen to Widespread Panic, Phish, String Cheese Incident, Umphrey's Mcgee, and Gov't Mule. Those guys just know how to hold it all together with no flash.
