Glad to be here. I've read many posts here over the last couple of years when researching equipment, and they've all been super informative.
My background...
Played guitar in bands in high school (78-80), typical stuff like Nugent, Skynyrd, Foghat, Aerosmith, BTO, Foreigner, Mother's Finest, Stones, etc. Played live several dozen times and always loved the rush.
Upon graduating HS in 1980, I joined a friends band playing bass. Started out playing strictly Zeppelin and Rush, then graduated to Yes, Dixie Dregs, etc. We had a great band. Everyone taught themselves to read music and we were really into progressive rock as we liked the challenge of playing such music. But we never could find a dedicated singer. Our guitar player (who was incredible) had a great voice and was pretty good at singing our set list simply didn't enjoy it because it took his focus away from his playing.
After practicing for 2 years and playing once, I went to Appalachian State Fall of 1982 as a music major studying classical guitar... for one semester. Band talked me into dropping out during my first Christmas break, so I played in the band for 8 more months (practicing, not live).
The next Fall (of 1982), I returned to college and changed my major to Computer Science... then life happened. So I didn't play guitar or bass much between 1987 and 2022.
Fast forward to Fall 2022... I got the bug again. In the last 1.5 years I've purchased a Fender American Pro II jazz bass (Dark Night), a Fender Jaco Pastorius fretless jazz bass, a candy apple red Sadowsky MetroExpress 5-string jazz bass which I upgraded with a Sadowsky VTC preamp, and a Fender Ultra Precision Ultrburst. I am REALLY getting into playing bass again, only this time I am not approaching it like a guitar (used to use a pick always). Trying to play everything with my fingers for now to learn raking, slap, and other techniques.
Relearning Zeppelin, Rush, Yes, Dregs tunes is fun, but also getting into Bruford tunes w/ Jeff Berlin, Holdsworth, Jaco Pastorius, Weather Report, King Crimson, and more. Just enjoying it and relearning my craft. Hope to find a band in the near future and start playing live again. Nothing like it. It's what is going to keep me busy thoughout my retirement I hope.
