Hi, all- I'm Jon, I live in North Carolina.

I just started playing bass at the beginning of the year, though I've played guitar (badly) for quite some time and piano (slightly less badly) even longer. (Isn't that cliché, that bad guitarist become bass players? I digress...) Anyway, I'm really enjoying it so far. I don't know how to explain it, but my ear has always been drawn to the rhythm section when listening to music. Playing guitar never really "clicked" in my brain the way the piano did, despite my best efforts and much frustration, but playing bass feels much more natural to me (so far anyway!). Looking forward to seeing where this journey takes me,

For gear I have gotten a Yamaha BB734 and a Hartke HD50.

I know the guitar is probably overkill for a newb, but I know myself well enough to know that if I don't get something nice enough to "grow into" I'll be spending too much of my time chasing new gear instead of practicing. So I'll save myself some time and $ by getting something nice from the jump! (And I got a sweet deal on a New Years sale and couldn't resist!)

Anyway, I look forward to meeting you and learning from your experiences!

Hey I just joined too and actually will be purchasing the BB734 today as well! (But I do see that the Fender Player II Jazz Bass is on sale for $699 and got me thinking 🤔)

How do you like the BB734 so far?

I'm still undecided for the amp, there are so many options. I've been researching quite a bit but still can't decide lol. How do you like the Hartke HD50?

Hello- I'm loving the BB734 and the HD50 so far. But I don't know if I'm the best to give recommendations, considering I don't have much experience with other gear, but I'm very happy with both!

I picked both of these based on their reputations- I've owned plenty of Yamaha gear (I currently have an FG3 acoustic and a Revstar electric too), so picking yamaha was a no-brainer for me. I know what I'm getting there, and it has not disappointed. Only complaint is I found one tiny spot of over-glue on fretboard/neck, but it doesn't really bother me.

As for amps, I considered some other brands too, but I've seen those aluminum cones on stages enough (I used to run bars that hosted live music) that I was confident it would sound good. And the only complaints I saw about hartke stuff was that it's a bit heavier than the competition and that it lacks some bells and whistles (effects loop, tuner, etc)... and those are things I don't care about. So that was also a pretty easy pick.

Fortunately there are plenty of high quality choices out these, so if your preferences are different than mine I'm sure you'll still find gear you love. Best of luck!

Thanks for the feedback, I'm hard set on getting the 734 after reading that. With your experience seeing the aluminum cones quite a bit I might have to check out the Hartke HD50

Which color 734 did you get btw?

Just a point of clarification because I don't want anyone to be confused- I did not see the HD50 in particular on stage, just other offerings by hartke. That was enough for me to know it is a reputable brand. The HD50 is most certainly inadequate for live gigging... if that's something that's important to you, you'll need something with more power. But for home practice the HD50 is great.
