Hi. As I plan on bouncing around these forums, I thought I might aswell introduce myself.
My name is Eugenio, I'm a 23 years old guy and I live in Fiumicino (near Rome).
I currently work in rome as a technical designer for UE4 VR products, and that's pretty much all.

The main reason I am here is becose I want to get back to my teenage whim of playing the bass (I played for like three months when I was 14), but in a more serious way.
I will be posting questions and reading threads about the mighty first purchase, and I do not not refrain from letting you know that I already have a plan, which is to buy a (possibly used) cheap-ish (but not too cheap) bass that satisfies me aesthetically and proves of good quality in terms of structure, in order to practice. If this thing triggers (meaning I'm getting decent), I will upgrade the components and keep the body part of the bass. I am not in love with this idea so I'm up for discussing it.

About the sound, i have no idea, really. I think luck will be my best friend here!

Take a friend that plays bass with you to a local music store and spend several hours picking out THE bass you would like to be seen playing. One of the starter kits will do every thing you ask of it. Five years from now when you ask something of your bass and it can not deliver, up-grade. My point; no one builds junk and stays in business. One of the "Name Brand" starter kits will work out fine. You will also need.......

.... A 10 watt amp, a cable, tuner, bass strap, music stand, and a how to play book. A gig bag will be needed when you start playing out side the home.

Welcome to TalkBass! I hope you and your people are doing well given the recent earthquake.

Go look at a few basses, hold them, play them, and then come back with questions. We need a better starting point for the conversation. But we are glad to help either way.

When you get around to asking those questions, start a thread in "Basses". It will get more attention there.

Thank you Fingers for the concern about the earthquake, we are doing the best we can to help eachother.

Indeed, we will have a better starting point. I have already advanced my knowledge (and doubts) and the idea is becoming more and more clear. For instance, I went to the shop where the guy suggested me that it is never conveniente to switch pieces in a bass, that one is always better off getting a full new one instead of upgrading - say - the pickup. I find that weird since all I have been told/read says otherwise. Anyway, the right place as you suggested is indeed another topic.
