I've been lurking for a bit but fancy joining in (assuming no-one minds), so I ought to post here. I started playing again last July after 20 years of slacking off, and have finally managed to get the instrument I've been after for years, an unlined Fender fretless Jazz. Before that I used to play an EUB around Oxford in various pub/bar/college gigs. There's no room for a double bass in my house at present but the relevant jazz technique forum here has proven rather useful recently!
Hello from another UK user! It’s good in here isn’t it, they’re very friendly towards us right-pondians. I recently got a fretless Jazz (Squier, and lined), Im enjoying the challenge! I’ll take a look in the jazz forum, thanks for the tip.
Thanks! The fretless Squier would have been my choice, if I could get on with the lines. It would have saved quite a bit of time and money. ;-)
I got a no line fretless. I found that I need the lines as my ear is tin and I do tend to go out with out the lines to guide me. Gave it to a young student and he loves it.
There's definitely a place for both lined and unlined. Personally, I started with an unlined fretless Encore E83, which was a budget P-bass copy available ~25 years ago, and therefore got used to that arrangement. Now, I find the position of the dot markers on a lined fretless rather confusing (I don't play fretted so the similarity to that doesn't help).
