Hi, my name's Gary and I am New to bass, and new to the forum. Been playing guitar for a while now, and picked up a friend's bass, and said, yeah, I need this in my life! Got myself a Fender American Standard P Bass, and a Rumble 100, I am ready to rock! (Not really, I need A LOT of practice!) Good to be here, looks like a cool place to learn and hang.

Welcome to the bottom end. Lot of us came over from 6 string guitar. The learning curve to bass is not that steep, however, the two instruments are played differently. You can use your same guitar sheet music and instead of strumming the chord play notes of the chord one note at a time to the beat of the song.

Time spent here How to get started? will be time well spent.

Have fun.

Thank you! I saw that link today, and already started going through it, very helpful stuff there! Yeah, it helps to have the guitar background for sure, so I am not starting off from scratch. I know a little theory, so that translates a bit as well. My guitar teacher will be helping me out a bit too.

Welcome. I too came from the guitar world. 10 years on a six where I dabbled in bass, and then bass became an obsession. There is 0 doubt in my mind that bass is my instrument.

It took me about a year to feel I truly converted. I still thought like a guitarist for a while. Listening to a lot of Jameson, RHCP, and funk helped to ground me. As did playing along with a metronome and learning to really groove with 8th and 16th notes. I used to sometimes just play a single note doing anything and everything I could with it, in a meditative type of way.

Anyhow... welcome to the other side. I hope you enjoy your stay here. Lots of cool supportive people on Talkbass.

Thanks! If anything, the bass looks more appropriate size-wise, as I am tall. My SG and Les Pauls look pretty small on me!
