Hi all, I'm a new bass player living in Wisconsin, here to draw on your collective knowledge Like a lot of folks here I have a background in other instruments (guitar and piano), and finally found my way to the electric bass. I'm a rank beginner at bass, so I imagine I'll mostly be hanging out in the background, but hope to contribute from time to time. Thanks to all of you for maintaining such a cool community here!
I have pretty expansive tastes - rock, pop, soul, R&B... What brought me to bass, though, was Motown and some of the rock players who were influenced by Motown, Stax, and Muscle Shoals. As for what I'm playing, I'm working my way through the Hal Leonard method, and trying (*trying*) to pick out some of Bruce Thomas's bass lines from Elvis Costello albums. As for gear, I noticed that most of the players whose sound I like tend to prefer Precision basses. After trying out a bunch of basses of all descriptions I agreed and bought myself a Fender Player P-Bass. For amplification I went for a Phil Jones double four that I think will more than cover my needs for practice and playing occasionally with friends who favor acoustic instruments. I'm a ways away from needing anything bigger. It's all been great fun so far, and I'm just getting started!
