I am a fairly new player, been playing for about 9 months or so. I took 7 months of lessons learning theory as well as a few songs I like. The arrival of my twins has taken a good chunk of my time so I quit them for now. Right now I am just playing at home and occasionally with a guitar playing friend with no drummer but that could change in the future. When not trying to learn and practice theory I am learning songs by playing along with them through my amp or stereo. My amp is a Fender Rumble 200.

I have been playing a Fender Blacktop Jazz with GHS pressurewounds on it. I like the sounds I can get with the fingers being slightly dull and the pick just bright enough. I just never could get used to the neck. I have fairly large hands and the small neck is just uncomfortable. I was going to buy a P-bass but I don't think I can go back to a single pickup now.

I'm going to go with a 5 string.I like the sound of a good b string and as I learn the fret board and more theory I like the idea of more notes and the ability to play in position. I am not set in my ways yet and would like to keep an open mind on learning to play this instrument. Some of the music I want to play will be in dropped tuning.

I have been looking at the Fender Dimension specifically the 5 string HH models. They have a lot of the features I'm looking for such as noise cancelling pickups, bigger neck, tonal variety easy truss rod adjustment etc. I like the sound clips I've heard so far. Good lows and just the right amount of growl. I had a chance to try a single coil model and even though it needed a set up the five string neck was great, very comfortable and fast,as was the 5 string jazz deluxe was I tried. it's my understanding they have the same neck.

My question is active or passive? How will the output be from either in comparison to my Blacktop with 2 p pickups? I like the idea of having adjustment right on the bass due to the wide variety of music I play. Everything from old country to newer metal. On the other hand I know me and don't want to start spending more time turning knobs than playing. With my current bass I just leave it plugged in and I can usually get close the sound I need just by tweeking volume and tone but it would be nice to be able to adjust the mids as well while keeping the same volume. My gripe with the active is I think I would prefer a blend knob instead of the 5 way switch and it should have a switch to kill the pre amp if you want.

I know it's opinion based but I would appreciate any feedback.

In my albeit limited experience, you'll be hard-pressed to find a passive bass that's ballsier than your Blacktop Jazz. Have you considered swapping out the neck for a wider Precision-style?

Yup tried that. I ordered a new MIM neck p neck from fender for it. Not even close on the fit. local luthier said the body would have to modified to make it work. I wasn't really interested in spending more money on it or permanently modifying it due to resale, I think most people like the jazz neck, so I returned it and started looking for a good p-bass. Then after trying a few 5 strings I got more interested in those so here I am.

That's really weird, especially in light of all the other BT owners who've swapped out their necks, myself included. It makes me wonder where the discrepancy is, either with the neck or the body.

The neck would slide into the pocket but not far enough if that makes sense. If you pushed it as far as it would go towards the bridge the screw holes lined up but it left about a 1/4" gap between the end of the neck and the body. I thought it looked lame and didn't want to alter the bass or have a custom pick guard made to cover the gap.
