I have a Warwick Rockbass Corvette 4 string and there is a blend knob for the two pickups, a volume knob, a bass control and trebel control. Problem is with the bass control knob. Whenever it is in the middle you can hear slight distortion on the really low notes. When it is turned up past that, it's full on muff sounding. What could cause this? Was working fine a few days ago. Someone said something about the shielding on the inside of the bass.... what is he talking about? They are active MEC pickups.

Has it always done this? (Though I assume it used to be fine.)
The pups are active, meaning they take a 9v supply directly to the pups. Check that the bad pup is getting power. Wiggle wires a little while listening.
Other thoughts:
- Pickup height. Too high can distort.
- Damaged wiring or a bad solder joint? Inspect and lightly move wires. See if a solder joint is loose where the wires attach.
- Something mechanical? Loose pickup screws?
