OK, I'm not Gary...but...we just built a bass as a custom order with two extra layers of poplar in the ribs and over-sized blocks all around (the top and back plates stayed the same as our regular builds). This owner has been very clear about the fact that he WILL be standing on it. I have not heard it yet...it will start varnish this week...but it is not much heavier so far so I assume it will sound just fine.

Oh, and a good friend of ours has his ribs reinforced with polished diamond plate. A bit heavy...but very cool.

Different strokes for different folks!:D

Eric, nice to hear from you. That Hawkes Hybrid you built for me? Love, love, love. Coming up on one year old and it continues to open up nicely. I still sub for Robby once in a while but I will NOT let him stand on my Upton, and my tank bass has been in the garage, lo these many months. Poor pitiful critter, I just can't stand the tone anymore :)

That's so cool about the custom bass! I know it's anathema to some but I'm glad there are guys that still go for the showy stuff. To each his own indeed...

Haha.

I saw Lee Rocker do a bass stand when he played in town a while back and he made it look easy. Croud went absolutely batpoopie nuts over it too. He is a wee little fella who plays in platform creepers (shoes) with his endpin all the way in. Probably makes it easier to climb, kinda like a jockey climbing up on his horse. :D

Me, I think it's been done way too many times and a bit cliche, but I still think it takes alot of balls to do stuff like that. But if you don't have the playing ability to back it up, then it's just lame.

Right on! Standing is the one stunt I can't do...I extend my endpin too far. But I'll do everything else. Not big on bodysurfing a bass with violin corners because they stick in my gut, but it's worth a few pokes in the side to play an Upton. Had my Hawkes almost 4 years now. Bought it strictly on word of mouth from the net, never played one. Glad I did. Sounds as good as many more expensive basses, blows away everything else in the < $2000 range.
