Help! G string buzzes between nut and tree

Hi all,

I just changed strings from the factory strings to dr sunbeams. Same gauge .45 .65 .85 .105.

As I tuned up the G string I noticed the string between the tree and the nut is vibrating and buzzing. It didn't do it before I changed strings.

Help! What do I need to do to fix it?

I should say it's a Fender p standard.

Never heard of that one. You may have twisted the string. Did you try to take it off and put it back on?

I tried that just now. It's still happening. I tried putting some thin rubber between the tree and the string to see if the string was vibrating against the tree but that didn't work either. Maybe it's vibrating in the nut?

I had the exact same problem develop on a MIM Blacktop Fender. I had only owned it about two weeks, so I returned it. A lot of guys later suggested that it just needed some filing on the nut slot.

Hmm ok I will take it to a tech and see if they can fix it. It's annoying the hell out of me lol.

Odds are it's not the string buzzing rather a tuner. Make sure all the parts of all four tuners are tight.

Second checking all the tuners, tuner bushings and even the string retainer. If it's not any of that it may be the nut slot needs to be sloped down towards the headstock a bit.

Ok well i loosened off all the strings, checked every screw on the headstock and everything was tight. I grabbed the smallest file I had and gave the slot a 2" stroke downwards to the headstock, replaced the strings and the buzz is gone.

Damn. I could have saved myself some time if I had done that. I did end up with the "black" Blacktop in the end though, and the one I returned was the Chrome Pearl.
