I mean, it includes the classic prog rock opus "Carry On Wayward Son", complete with: multiple time signature changes, in-depth instrumental breaks, multi-part vocal harmonies, and an absolute requirement for keys, for a band of children that has no keyboardist

Yeah I play Carry on Wayward Son in my main band. It's no piece of cake!

3 maybe 4 rehearsals before the show. It's a good challenge!

If you need to fill time you could do a rendition of the CCR cover of heard it thru the grapevine. Or maybe Suzy-Q You could guitar solo for half an hour through either or both of those if you needed to. - Mostly kidding here....

I don't think CCR resonates with the kids like it does with us. That said, it is surprising what songs the 16 year old knows!

I've been playing for audiences in Colorado for the past 20 years. They know and like "Sloopy" here too.

On the topic of what does the average 16-year-old like these days, most of the time it's a little bit of everything. Young people today generally have a healthy knowledge and respect for 60's through 80's, music that was made and played way before they were born. We just did a big school dance, and they asked for swing tunes (I guess you can learn how to dance in physical education these days). We pulled out all the country, big band, or oldies that swing we could think of, "Jump Jive an Wail," "Don't Rock The Jukebox," ""Jailhouse Rock," etc.

The kids knew and loved them all.

So those CCR/John Cougar/Tom Petty/Bob Seger three-chord wonders will probably do pretty well for OP's needs, especially since I assume the audience is all ages.

I like the simple blues type suggestions because people know them and they'll be easy to learn. Get off my cloud. The twist. Twist and shout.
The kids must have favourite songs that they know.

Play some rock n roll songs. Johnny Be Good, Hound Dog, Summertime Blues, Wild Thing.

They may be a good band but they are still kids, everyone is impressed that they can play at all. The song choice is a minor consideration.
