HELP...HOW DO YOU REMOVE

HELP...HOW DO YOU REMOVE glue residue build up from a 37 year old Jazz bass. I'll explain... I have a 37 year old Fender J bass that the original owner had a Fender plastic back protector on for 37 years. He never took it off so the glue and foam that is inside the protector around the perimeter of the protector stuck /smeared against the bass body around the rim of the bass body. How do I remove it without wrecking the finish... the J bass is a 1975 and I do believe a poly finish...I can provide pic.s to anyone who can help. Thanks

If it's thick poly and not chipping or very worn, you can use WD-40 to remove that glue. I used that stuff to de-sticker a strat and it worked well, and after wiping away the WD she looked like she did stock.

The foam off-gassed into the nitro/urethane finish. You have a chemical problem and not a physical problem.

Some of the gunk is still sitting on the paint...I don't know how much has gone into the paint...if any. Potentially very tricky situation.

I'd trust mikey, he knows twice as much as a chemical engineer but makes half the money, lol. My guess, even without seeing pics, is that you're hooped if you want to preserve the underlying finish. More than likely, even if you could get it off without damaging the finish below, it would still look all wonky due to uneven fading and wear compared to the rest of the bass. I'd personally probably just play it like that, and if you really want to remove it, be prepared to live with the additional mojo...

Goo Gone, The Finish is Nitro, no poly involved at all. Buy a small bottle of goo gone and give iot a whirl. You'll be surprised how well iot works.
