I play in a metal band with three guitarists, so if you can't hear yourself with two, somebody is doing something wrong.
If you're in the right sonic space, you shouldn't need an excessive amount of volume to be heard. Finding that space can be a little difficult, especially if you have an amp that only has "mids" and no definitive control of which frequencies you're choosing. I've also noted that a P bass usually gets me buried, but ymmv with that one.
