It's heavy for its weight, dunno what else to say
It's Mahogany, but what type of it, anyone?

It looks exactly like the wood that the saddle of my kids' rocking horse is made from - Sapele. I thought it was mahogany and gave the scraps to a woodturner who makes conducting batons. He was thrilled to get some sapele handle blanks.

My vote goes toward African. I've worked with a fair amount of pieces that have a very similar ribbon grain pattern.

+1 on the african mahogany. I have been looking at this stuff a lot latly as it is what I intend on building my body and possibly my neck out of. Any thoughts on this as a neck wood?

I, too, have had some nicely figured African mahogany (Khaya)... ribbon striped figure throught he whole think. Grabbed it at Windsor Plywood, of all places.

I'm a far cry from the expertise of a lot of the fellow TB'ers here, but I built a humidor out of Sapele, and my bedroom furniture is made of Khaya mahogany. I'd bet the bank that that bass is quartersawn Sapele.

What's the difference in sound between Honduran Mahogany and African?
Anyone has a picture with Honduran Mahogany so i can compare?

The bass is made by a local Luthier, it's a copy of a Fodera Monarch.

I have sold several hunderd african body blanks that looks just like that. But I have also sold many honduran blanks that look similar also. It just don't feel that it is sapele, I have my reasons. Why don't you just contact the builder and ask him? That seems to me to be the easiest way to know for sure.

One more reminder.... Khaya is a genus and not a species. There are at least six Khaya species grouped together as "African mahogany" trade named. Several are vastly different in weight, color and texture than others.
