Double Bass Help identifying strings

Hi,
I have had my bass for a couple of years, and anytime someone plays it, they invariably say it is difficult. The action is fine, so I am wondering if it is the strings. Is there an easy way to identify what kind of strings are on a bass, and for bluegrass playing, what kind are the easiest to play? The loudest? Thanks in advance for the info.
Cheers!

Looks like D'Addario Helicore Hybrids.
Good quality string, nothing special there.

Maybe the grooves at the top nut are too high?
There shouldn't be more than two business cards space there, between the strings and the fingerboard.
Usually, the thickness of a single business card is okay.
