Help - Is My New Bass Faulty

Hi guys,

First post here and also new to bass guitar!

Heres my problem

I recently bought a fender jazz bass. When i play around with one of the pickup volumes when i increase the gain, i get a high pitched continous sound [slight breaks], it dissappears as i put the gain down. [through the bass amp]

From my musical background and basic electronic knowledge i would guess that its somewhere in the bass guitar which is faulty.

Could it be the Bass amp or lead??

All the best, and thank you in advance for any input you may have!

Rastafari bless,

Alex

Troubleshoot the problem: Try a different amp / cable / instrument. The key to something like this is isolating the problem.

If you try your bass with a "known good" cable and amp, and it still squeals, then you know where the problem is. Next trick is to sort out what is wrong with your bass, right?

If your bass is "new, new" (didn't buy it used), then return it. Shouldn't have this problem with a brand new bass.

If it's new to you (used) then it sounds like a dirty or possibly bad volume pot. Checkout the Hardware, Setup and Repair forum for the right cleaner to use and guidance (I don't remember the right stuff to use). Even if it's a bad volume pot, not an expensive fix.

What kind of bass is it?

Big old harry, i will do these tests tomorrow and report back,

hyperthetically speaking though, what would you guess,

seeing as this sound is only produced through changing of this knob on the bass guitar itself

@LUVMUSIC thanks for your reply [ i composed the above before your post],, luckily it is a brand new bass, worse case scenario is a send it back

On a jazz bass, the pickups will hum when the volume of the two are not matched. This is the nature of single coil pickups, which give the jazz bass it's distinctive sound. It's normal to hear a hum with the volume of only one pick up turned up. You can move further away from your amp to minimize it, but it won't go away entirely.
