Double Bass help me buy a bass!!!

hi all!
im from the other side and i want to try the dark side.
you guys know the drill.
i want something nice but not too nice.
im just not familier with brands or the quality of brands.
for instance
i found a cremmona?? (i think that was the name) for 700.
but i know nothing!

im willing to spend up to 1200.00
is that even enough?
please help

Hi. Here's hoping you will join the dark side. It's worth doing a search on "cremona" and also reading through a few of the recent threads. While some of the posts got a bit flame-y, at least the threads cover the range of opinions about lower cost basses.

Welcome-- please read the newbie links carefully and then c'mon back with questions. In a nutshell:

$1200 is the absolute minimum for a quality entry-level plywood bass. You CAN get something decent for that money if you shop carefully. I agree that Shen would seem to be your best bet. Buy from a REAL bass shop that will provide a good setup. Having a good setup is absolutely paramount. Avoid eBay CCBs* like the plague.

Agreed. Check out the Shen SB80. Even if you have to spend a BIT more, its so much more worth having a bass that is easy to play and structurally sound. If you find that the DB isn't for you, its easy to sell. If you find it is for you, you have a great playing bass that will help you to learn.

correction i play professionally!!!
ive been steady gigging for 22 years!
i know i will enjoy playing upright, hell ive even done a cpl upright tracks.
but just because i play electric 4-5 nights a week and ive touched an upright a few times over the years doesnt mean i know anything about construction and or quality!
i just want to know what a good entry level deal would be.

You'll have to get used to random bass guitar guys who don't take the time see what forum they are in before posting. $1200 is whole lot for a beginner slab, but it's a smidgen low for a good bass and what we'd recommend to get at start. The nice part is that a Thompson, Christoper or Shen will last your for many years of progress, unless you get the itch to spend $5000+ later on, which is a nice plus but not necessary. I'd be happy to have a Thompson, or even better, a Christopher RN in addition to my other basses if I had the space.
