Because it's not necessary. Squiers ar excellent basses, period.
BTW, Squier is a "real" Fender. Says so on the headstock (twice), and Fender is the comoany that makes a profit for every Squier sold.

+1

And the original poster said spend "a little more" to go with their US version. A little?? You need to earn a lot of coin for that difference to register as "a little".

Why don't you spend the little bit extra and buy the real thing ''Fender'' american made jazz or P and keep it for the rest of your life

I own an American Jazz...want a Squier as sort of a "beater" to drag around to some of the skankier bars we play:p

Here's a pic of the butterscotch 50's P, just to make your decision a little more interesting:

Ohhh...nice. Kinda like the shiny blue finish better tho.

I've got both. I prefer the split coil but it really kind of depends on my mood. The scpb is a brighter sound, almost J-ish to my ears. Since you've already got a J I'd say get the Freeman for the variety. I love the black/maple look, too.

edit--just re-read that you want something cheap to take to the seedy gigs. So if you want something closer to your J sound then go with the 50's.

FYI--my split coil is an SX and my scpb is a blue CV like you're looking at.

Without any comment or opinion on the brand choice, between the two my preference is the black/black/maple. I like the standard precision body shape and pickup better than the 50's style and it's one of my favorite finish/pickguard/fingerboard combos. Your taste may be different, but I'd play both anyway to see which one feels and sounds best to you.

Indeed... SCPB is different than split P.. Yes it's about in the middle of J and P IMHO.. thats what I like about it...IME w SCPB, Fender Sting Precision, put roundwounds and it'll be twangy, flatwound makes it buttery thumpy, or (some say) put Fralin SCPB +6 will make it like split P and make the single coil buzz disappear,...
And the colour.. IMHO is very nice.. I never try both of that Squier, and the Freeman looks cool too.. But my instinct tell me to vote the 50s over the black one,
Good luck with your choice man, any of them will help you make good music on bass and looks good anyway :D
