Help me fight the overdrive/distortion I want.

It definitely sounds like a guitar distortion, because he hasn't got a lot of low end left. I've never used the Boss Hyper Metal, but I've used an unmodded DS-1 and it wasn't that far off from that tone.

Also, why does he play the riff from Aqualung at the beginning?

The Hyper Metal's are pretty tricky to get ahold of now, so your lucky you have one near-by! I went through the phrase of wanting the sound on ''Love you to Death'' and although i tried i couldn't source a hyper metal.

def. a chorus pedal. i love that sound. and pick up the boss reverb pedal too. and if you chain that and the boss bass overdrive (odb) put the reverb behind it.. or on the left. haha. if not it will bleed really heavy over everything. my experience is they should always be the last pedals. the only pedal i use after is bass wah. to make it scream. have fun in the process.. tell me if the svt 3 cuts out. and you will def. need the chorus pedal for that sound in the vid.
