Help me find the perfect OD pedal!

Hello guys! :hyper:
Recently I decided to get an overdrive pedal but I'm so lost...
To give an idea, I'm looking for an organic dirty sound like Faith No More, Helmet, Snot, Tomahawk (I really love Kevin Rutmanis sound), but I also want it to be pushed further like in Around The World by the RHCP.

I don't really like the synthy sound (atleast that's what I've heard from the demos) of the ODB-3, even if it seem versatile.

I thought that the Darkglass B3K would be good but the price is way too high for my tiny budget (under 100$)
Joyo seems like a good compromise, but I'm really not sure about the quality.

And if you have samples of a pedal with the sound I'm looking for (it can even be the ODB) I'll be glad to hear it too!
Thanks! :hyper:

The joyo stuff isn’t bad, really. And if you get it from Amazon, you’ve got a an easy return path.

As for recommendations, the aftershock is definitely a good one, as long as you’re ok with menus and stuff. Wasn’t for me, personally. I’m using the Grizzly now and it does everything I need and without any menus to dive through. Other great drives that have got a lot of love around here over the years are the Vulcan, the Barbershop, the beta, 5th gear (really awesome, imo), and obviously the darkglass stuff.

The SA Aftershock comes with 6 great sounds that you can easily tailor to your needs with with the Neuro phone or computer app. Add to that the hundreds of creations shared on the Neuro.Cloud you can sample, load and modify as you need. With the Neuro app you can mix and match from nearly every popular, classic to modern circuit with full control over gain, saturation, mix and tonal EQ.

Otherwise you can commit to the inevitable and never ending search, buy, trade, sell, collect or destroy mission in your search for the "perfect OD, Dirt ,Drive" pedal that so many of us have thru hundreds of tries, buys, near misses and search for the unobtainium. I have been searching for ages, hundreds of pedals, own 30-40 dirt pedals, worked with builders, engineers and spent hundreds on rare vintage, custom or prototype pedals and still the Aftershock is my suggestion.

The Tech21 Oxford was the first pedal I played that gave me the Billy Gould "Grunt". combine that with an even brighter overdrive in line and you can basically have his tone. A bass with rock maple on board wouldn't hurt either.

You want something that can kind of fuzz out, but at the same time give you that broken tin can metallic pang.

I wound up using preamps based off his original amps, and well...the same exact amp he used for his early albums.

How do you like the JohnK Century vs the Peavey head?

Sooner or later I’m probably going to end up with a beastly old Peavey, or one of the John K preamps to scratch that itch.

A B3K is definitely the type of pedal you are looking for. And I'll be honest about the ODB...it may be the worst pedal I've ever used.

So to get a B3K type sound on the cheap, The Source Audio Afterburner is fantastic and gives you lots of sounds. Another option is the GupTech BassBone, which is a B3K clone

Personal favorites are tube based pedals because you are actually overdriving. But there is no best.
Many S.S. older amps naturally went into overdrive, and usually giving a harsher, fuzzier overdrive. That is the crux of Billy's tone, and also Duff McCagan's early GnR tones.

They were not clean, but very different from the "waterlogged" SVT tones, which were also cool.

I got that sound for years with the combo of the B3K and a gutsier overdrive to cover the mids. The Alpha-Omega/Omicron was pretty notable for getting a great blend of those tones.

The JohnK pedal(both of the ones I have) do a more-than-admirable job of that Peavey MarkIII/MarkIV tone.

I just saw that amp for 200 on Ebay and knew they wouldn't be around forever. Esp after all these years of my friend bugging me on my tone quest: "You know the f**king amp Billy used, why won't you just BUY THE AMP instead of messing around so much??"

"It's ugly. It reminds me of a Plymouth Volare dashboard/it will stick off the sides of my Eden cab, unlike my Mesa Bass 400 or my GK800RB"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's my favorite amp now. But do not hesitate on the JohnK pedals. Top-notch.

This was the JohnK with my Ric/newer strings, going through my Mesa Bass 400. The Mesa is set very warm and clean here-all the grind is the Centurion pedal:

The new Darkglass B1K might be a little closer to your price range
