Help me idenitify the effect(s) on this riff

The song is Double Team by Tenacious D. I have isolated/learned the riff using Audacity. Happens first at 1:43 and then a few times after that. Hard to miss it as it is pretty funky. I am wondering if anybody recognizes the effects on it. Sounds to me like some sort of muddy/fuzzy overdrive or something. I have never owned any pedals so I don't know much about the different effects out there. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a synth is being played to me. You can cop that kind of tone with a synth pedal like the EHX Micro Synth, or an analog octaver like the BOSS OC-2, Aguilar Octamizer, or MXR Bass Octave Deluxe and run it into a fuzz.

Synthy! Could be a number of things, in all honesty..synth pedals are not my thing. Some dudes here though..
