Help me identify effect

Hi there...

Im kinda new to this with bass effects..
Me and a few friends have just started a new band and i think its time for me to upgrade my supply of effects.. in this video

is a great sample of a really robust driven bass sound, but how do i get a similar tone? Is it just overdrive or what? Im studying so my budget is limited. and im not asking for the exakt tone of course.. trent is a genious in creating sounds and i dont think its possible with a limited budget, but the type of sound....

Sounds like some nice grindy overdrive, but it sounds like there might be some synth in there, too.

Nine Inch Nails tends to use a lot of synthesized, fuzz-driven, or overdriven basslines. On most other NIN songs (especially their older stuff), don't be surprised to see that the bass is seldom used, and that a keyboard is handling the bulk of the work.

EDIT: Of course, a bass can still do a lot of that with the right pedals :D

It's a Precision bass played with a pick, but some gritty overdrive over the top of it. Some parts sound like there could be some fuzz on the top of it, as well.

I'd suggest trying out a Little Big Muff for the fuzz, should fit your needs pretty well. If you want overdrive, my Fulltone Bass-Drive sounds great and can get a similar tone to that--but it's a bit more expensive than the LBM.

yeah, ive been thinking about a big muff of some kind... ive heard the russian shuld preserve the lower frequenses better.. I own a behringer OD now that I bought second hand for $15 that works, but it sounds pretty ****.

+1 to everything Dash said. A pick with a good fuzz pedal like the Little Big Muff can get a similar tone, and it holds the low end extremely well (and can easily boost it).

I should've thought of that sooner - I use that combo myself sometimes! :D

EDIT: As for the DFA1979 thing... hmm... definitely fuzz, but I don't think it's a Muff. Maybe a ZVex Wooly Mammoth? Seems more dark, so that might be it.

I actually use a Little Big Muff, blended with my clean signal, for some QOTSA songs I'm trying to learn. I think it sounds great!

Nick Oliveri's probably using a highly overdriven, warm tube amp, at the least. Maybe an all-tube Ampeg SVT? Oddly enough, I've never looked into his gear. I think it's time I did...

Yeah... he used ampeg with the queens i know.. had two huge rigs facing each other..:eek:
