If I break down and get one, I was thinking of the Bruce Thomas Signature bass. Maybe it will make me play like him.

Those are great basses. You can’t go wrong there. They do have super hot pickups, though.

So Anyway, I had the same SB2 Candy Apple Red G&L. It was a fine instrument. I let it go along with a bunch of other basses that weren't getting any gig time. I wish I had one now just for the color!

Mine is actually ruby red metallic, which is a bit darker than candy apple. But they’re both great colors. And coincidentally, I ordered this one because I missed my old candy apple red one.

I have a G&L L2000 that I adore. I've never owned a Precision or PJ. Everyone talks about how great the Precision sounds.

The L2000 has tons of flexibility, and all the buttons and knobs don't bother me.

I'm starting the think maybe I should get a Precision or a PJ (or a non-Fender version) so I can see what the fuss is about. Or, maybe you all can help.

Can someone who owns both help be dial in a P-Bass sound with the G&L? Say, a P-Bass with the tone knob all the way open, halfway, and all the way down? Is that possible?

I'm a reformed keyboard player, so I love knobs and switches.

You don't need another bass. Get one if you want one. TB is not the place to ask if you really don't want to spend money. The L-2000 is very versatile and covers more tones than most. It tends to be more aggressive than a passive Fender bass but I think they sound great, to my ear like a more muscular Jazz bass.

Get a P. And a J. Not a PJ, which (with all due respect to its devoted users) is not the same as either of these iconic instruments.

Do you really want a P, or do you have the feeling that people expect you to have one? Honestly?
OK, if YOU really want a P sound hard, it's better to have a P than to try imitating with a L-2000. But who can hear the difference except Talkbass members? You don't play music for TB members, you play music for yourself and for normal human beings. Do what you want, but I wouldn't (I have a L-2000, no P, and I don't feel any need to buy a P).

Haha! Well, I also have a Yamaha TRBX 604 and a Peavey Foundation from the early 90s.

Peavey Foundation is a good bass to have, keep that one.

No, a Precision is not the penultimate bass. A Precision is the first widely used production electric bass, and some might argue that it's also the ultimate bass, but the penultimate bass? We may never know what that is.

So, you definitely need a detox from buttons and switches. Buy the simplest Squier (CV) P you'll find! And enjoy it!

I have a love hate thing with fender P basses...I think they are cheap built but my 70's P's are my go to for any recordings and when I'm doing a hard rock set it's perfect. My other PJ's are not the same esp with actives. I use the tone knob full dark most tunes but when I take a solo or try to mimic a Pick tone It goes bright. On some of my other basses with P style pickups I have a cap switch that goes between open, bright, and dark settings instead of a tone knob and I use in the same way.
BTW you came to the wrong place if you want to be talked out of buying another bass
