Help me understand this rig setup (Lucas - King Gizzard - Live on KEXP 2018)

I'm trying to understand what's happening here.

I see what appears to be an Ampeg SVT Micro-VR going into an Ampeg SVT 210AV and a Fender fridge (not sure which cab this is).
It appears the head pushes 200w @ 4 ohms, the Ampeg cab 200w @ 8 ohms.
So is he only pushing 100w each into the Ampeg and Fender cabs? Love his tone here, and I'm sure mic'ing / FOH plays a part.. But it seems quite under-powered?...

As an aside, and what is prompting more curiousity:
I've inherited an SVT 210AV, and want to eventually (potentially) pair it with a Mesa Subway 15 (powered by a WD-800).. In this instance, each cab would be getting 400w @ 4 ohms, yes? Might be risky putting that much power into that 2x10?...

I don't know, but I've just discovered this band, they are amazing and the bassist is very inspiring.

Maybe he's just using the Fender cab like a piece of furniture, in order to have the ampeg cab closer to ear's level ? (and because it looks cool).

Pretty sure the little Ampeg is the KEXP house rig. Lots of bands have used it onair. He could just be using the big cab as a riser

You should be ok as long as you
are careful with the volume knob - you're ears should tell you when you're pusshing the cabs too hard. Also don't do anything crazy with the EQ, such as cranking the lows all the way up.

I gigged for 10 years with a power amp that doubled my speakers rating and never had an issue by following the above advice (that i got here at TB)

KG&LW are amazing and pump out quite a bit of music. Probably not worth worrying about what he’s using and why. They will typically go into pawn shops or music stores and grab weird gear to play thru so you never really know what’s in their back line for these videos.

(See red arrow) Looks like a DI is inserted between the bass and amp. So it's possible what you are hearing has nothing to do with the amp or either cab.

Could be an RNDI

This guess is based on the color of the front panel, the jack location, and power LED.

Pretty sure there is no mic on the 210AV. I could only see about the top 3rd of the Fender cab. No idea if it's plugged in or if it has a mic on it.

Without a bit more detail, there is really no way to understand what is going on for sure.

Most 810s are 4 ohms. The SVT210AV is an 8 ohm cab. 8 ohms and 4 ohms combines to 2.67 ohms. AFAIK the Micro VR is rated 4 ohms minimum; so it can only push one of these cabs. It's possible the other cab could be powered by a second amp.

There is some logic to using the Fender cab as a speaker stand for the Ampeg rig. I don't see any reasonable logic for using the SVT210AV as a pedestal to get the Micro VR even higher.

The amp is probably there just for the band to hear it.

The audio crew (likely still led by Kevin Suggs) does a really good job and I’m sure they like the band to moderate stage volume whenever they are willing/able.

I’ve seen bands use there own gear as well.

Years ago the club I did sound at did a monthly live band set broadcast on KEXP. I had to do a aux mix from the booth in addition to the house and monitor mixes. I really could only monitor with headphones and ducking under the board or running out to their truck and listening to the broadcast on the radio.

It was fun but definitely a bit nerve wracking! I would listen the the show later on the radio station’s streaming archive.

I have done exactly this in a studio with a large backline cab. Just plopped my 1x12 rig on top.
Great for self monitoring at reasonable room recording levels.
Made me want to build a fake "fridge" cab just for that purpose at gigs

If you like them, might also want to check out Tropical F@#k Storm — another Aussie band that collaborates with KG. They are a little wilder/abrasive, but really interesting.

Agree. I've discovered them recently so I'm still in my honeymoon but

• I can't believe how productive they are (they've released more than one LP per year, like the Beatles, who else does that in 2025 seriously?).
• I've rarely seen a band who explores so many genres of music, and I love the fact that each album is very coherent inside a specific genre and then they do something completely different for the next album.
• I will see them live in Paris in november with a symphonic orchestra, I can't wait.
• I still struggle to really enjoy their metal albums but I'm working on it and I have a lot of softer pieces to enjoy in the meantime.

My only frustration is that for the moment I haven't been able to share my love with my bandmates, I think it takes a lot of effort to get used to their music, and maybe my bandmates are too lazy or don't trust me when I tell them it's worth the effort. This necessary "initial effort" probably explains why they are not yet the biggest rock band in the world they deserve to be.

Just went to the 3 day festival here in Colorado. It was transformative for me. It’s best to see them live to appreciate what they are doing

Yes. I've got my tickets for their next concert in Paris, but I've seen Youtube videos, apparently they're going to play excatly the last album (+ a couple of songs from the previous album at the end of the show). I'm fine with that since I love it - it's in my confort zone. But I'd love to see them play songs from all their discography too, like they probably did during your festival. So I guess I envy you.
