Double Bass HELP ME W/ A COMPRESSION QUES.

im really new to amplification, i have a peavey tour 700, an ampeg 4/10" cab and an older but solid sun 15" parrallelled. a no-name china bass, w/wedwhackers and a k&k rb+ bidge/fret pickup pre amp combo rig. it sounds great. but i read about other players rigs and some use commpressors, my ques. being a stand up player yourself do you see a need for it. all my local buddys play p-basses and whatnot. also they play totally diff. music, mostly dub reggea and stuff. they all boast compession. i want a urb'ers opinion. cos i can score an older alesis rack mount for 30bux. thanks for any help

It depends.

Expanding on that: I find every playing situation/room slightly different. In the same sense you'll find you need to dial in your amp eq differently depending on the room, if you've got compression in your system it'll follow suit that you'd need to change how/why/if you use it based simply on how well it's working.

I had an Alessis compressor in my rack for awhile that I used on loud/slap heavy gigs, mostly with a slow-ish (>50ms) attack time to bring out some punch in the slap sound and control the low end response on the pizz playing... it can be a double edged sword - boosting low level signal (which is essentially what a compressor does) can really bring out the feedback.
Something else to keep in mind is that some bass amps have an inherent amount of "compression" in their sound naturally - if your setup sounds good as is, don't sweat it.

Never had much use for compression with double bass, even playing fairly loud rockabilly and country.

My Pro Platinum preamp has a one-knob transparent optical compressor and I only use a tiny bit, maybe 10-11 o'clock - or off completely.

thats pretty much how i see it why mess w/ it i think it sounds great but these guys love to talk and rave when esentially, none of them play stand-up,or rockabilly, and so on. at the same time they are great musicians full of knowledge where as i have no idea. thanks to these types of pages or id be totally clueless. thanks all
