help needed, cat related

You are grieving. You need time to go through the process before getting another pet. I also agree with others you really should not get one while under your Dad's roof.

Also, going to college AND taking care of a pet may not work well. Just want you to think longer term. A dorm will likely not allow pets. Apartments usually require big pet deposits$. If you have roomates, they may not be 'into' cats and their related issues (peeing, hair, hairballs) and it could get ugly.

Take deep breaths and chill. Take your dog for a walk. Connect with your dog and cat. Maybe you can makeup with the cranky cat and warm up to it.

Good luck.

Stumbo said: You're vet may have been incorrect in the diagnosis.

Exactly what I was thinking. Your Dad took advantage of the vet's poor analysis, without considering the feelings of others. My sympathies.

You do not want to bring another animal into his house, though. Please be patient and wait until you are able to move away to adopt a new pet.

You won't be able to do the following anytime soon, but some months down the road, I would suggest you try to view your Dad's actions from his perspective. It won't make him more right, but it may help you cope with your feelings about him.

Good luck, and now go pick up your bass for awhile.

So sorry for your loss, OP, but I think I can see where your dad is coming from on this. When my bf moved in with me a couple of years ago, he had a lovely, but elderly cat who had numerous pee accidents all over our apartment. Beds, chairs, floors (thank god we don't have carpets), you name it. I was getting pretty fed up (and was pretty angry about it, something I'm not proud of, as my bf loved his cat). If the cat had damaged property belonging to guests, I'd have hit the ceiling. The vet couldn't say exacatly what was wrong with her. He prescribed meds but they didn't help much and her condition got even worse. Eventually the cat was put to sleep. Cats can develop all kinds of medical problems as they get older and sometimes vets have a hard time accurately diagnosing and successfully treating the problem. Sounds like your dad had reached the end of his patience. Finding another home for the cat would have been next to impossible, as there aren't many folks willing to risk damage to their property in order to have a pet. As for convincing your dad to get another cat, I think the suggestion about the hairless (or almost hairless) cat is a good one. A former boss of mine got one because his kids wanted a cat and he's allergic to cat hair. What a character this cat is! He is the source of endless amusing stories and his family adores him. Another suggestion is to give it some time and see if your dad softens a bit. Right now, the embarrassment of having your visiting family member's suitcase peed on might be too fresh in his mind! What does your mom and/or other family members think about getting another cat? It might help your cause if you had a bit of support.

But I'm kinda being a total @$$H0l3 with my dad, every time he talks to me i just answer him, "shut up, u killed my cat"... I know this is not a good way to convince him and that it's not helping at all, but that's the way i feel :hmm:

If you are going to be completely unreasonable in discussing this with your father then why are you even worrying about it? Just continue hating him each day and pout until he caves or you gain control of your own place.

Or you could just deal with the fact that you will have new responsibilities in college and will be around people some of whome don't want to be around a cat and put off getting a pet until you graduate and start working and paying for your own place.

or you could just start peeing on everything

This is the worst thing you could do. Remember what he did to your cat?

I'm stronger/tougher/faster then my dad, he had cancer, has back problem and probs in a leg, it will end better for me then him....

I've been bigger/faster/stronger than my pop since I got out of high school. The thought of striking him to inflict harm has never crossed my mind in a serious manner. Sure, I got mad when he disciplined me.

So forget the cat, and work on mending the relationship with your pop. Or maybe it isn't that bad and we're blowing it out of proportion.
