Help on lead bass

I skipped this one because I'm not sure what your Dad is asking. As no one else has jumped on it here goes...

Playing lead as in taking the lead in my World would mean to play the melody, and he then will back you up with chord tones.

Offered for what it is worth.

You can't think like a bass player, you are playing a melody. Listen to the guitar leafs, vocals, etc. When in doubt, start playing the vocalist's line, and work from that. Eventually you might get to this - New/obscure jazz & fusion players?

Nothing wrong with a beginner not playing a lot of leads. I've been playing for about 40 years, and I prefer playing short breaks at most.
