I'm a poor college student and I need a bass. I have been playing my friends MIA Fender Deluxe P. It's time for me to get my own, as he is tired of sharing. My budget is $500. So I'm considering a MIM Fender or a Carvin active kit. Or anything else you can suggest. What should I do?

  2. I would suggest either G&L L2000 Tribute new or L2000 MIA used. Either one would be a good choice for you. Very versatile instrument with a lot of tonal options. ;)

    I can't argue with the L-2000 - it's a great choice.

SX (RondoMusic.com?) have been getting all sorts of kudos on every forum I visit. I've never seen one.

Perhaps a used Fender Geddy Lee?

If I suddenly found myself without bass and I needed one immediately, I'd be looking at a new MIA Fender P-Bass. I know it's out of your budget. On your budget I'd be looking used, but since I usually don't buy basses without playing them, it'd be whatever I could find. G&L and some sort of P-Bass would catch my eye.

Oh - How about a Yamaha BB414? I've become a real Yamaha booster - they make quality instruments up and down their line - and they're always a good value. I've had two old Yamaha BB300's (I've still got one) and they were both really well built. The BB414 is a nice alder body, I think. I'm a big fan.

In my "I need a solid bass _NOW_" scenario the BB414 would top my list. Best of luck.

There's a MIM Fender Pbass Deluxe up on the classifieds here for $350 shipped.

I have no affiiliation but thats a pretty good deal on a pretty good bass.

A used Geddy if you can find one for $500 is a decent snag as well.

    Good Luck
