I can't argue with the L-2000 - it's a great choice.
SX (RondoMusic.com?) have been getting all sorts of kudos on every forum I visit. I've never seen one.
Perhaps a used Fender Geddy Lee?
If I suddenly found myself without bass and I needed one immediately, I'd be looking at a new MIA Fender P-Bass. I know it's out of your budget. On your budget I'd be looking used, but since I usually don't buy basses without playing them, it'd be whatever I could find. G&L and some sort of P-Bass would catch my eye.
Oh - How about a Yamaha BB414? I've become a real Yamaha booster - they make quality instruments up and down their line - and they're always a good value. I've had two old Yamaha BB300's (I've still got one) and they were both really well built. The BB414 is a nice alder body, I think. I'm a big fan.
In my "I need a solid bass _NOW_" scenario the BB414 would top my list. Best of luck.
