HELP! pickup questions

i have finally decided to build my own bass. i have already purchased the wood and hardware for the bass but my problem is that i cant decide what pickups i should use. I was originally going to do a pbass body design with jazz pickups and jazz pickguard but today i found a used seymour duncan MM replacement pickup for $29 so now im thinking of doing a stingray style bass.

so heres my question....
is it possible to use a MM pickup without a preamp so that it is just passive? i was hoping to just wire it up with just a volume and tone pot...

if this is possible how well will it sound? will it sound anything close to a stingray or will it just sound like poo?

any help will be much appreciated!!

thanks,
dyllan

nah i havent bought it yet.
i figured the MM pickup would be a nice buy if it sounded good but i guess il just save my money.

how are the dimarzio model j's?

im looking for something cheap, aggressive sounding, and that has ALOT of punch, clarity, and growl. and that isnt to hard to install...
