HELP! What 6 string bass should i get?

Right, so I've been thinking about buying a six string bass for quite a while now and the time has come for me to expand my range once again. The problem is I really cannot decide which six string to get. I don't really know that much about brands and makes of six strings, if they're much different 5/4 strings so I need some help. I have anything up to £1200 to play with, except if possible I'd like to keep it at around £800. I play a wide rande of styles including funk and slap bass, but also prog metal stuff like Dream theatre. Thanks alot! :)

The transition from 5 to 6 was way easier for me than 4 to 5 was. As for basses in that price range, I don't have much experience with sixers. I would say think of what your favorite brands are and see what they offer in a 6. I'll throw in a recommendation for Warwick, simply because they're my personal favorites.

Haha I don't really want a warwick becuase I'm playing a Warwick corvette std 5-string at the moment, so I wanted something a bit different. However that being said I'm really enjoying my current bass. Thanks for the advice anyway :)

When you are playing a wide range of styles including funk and slap bass, but also prog metal stuff like Dream theatre. It makes it a little difficult to make a recommendation...Slap would normally need a little wider string spacing (ala 19) where the prog stuff requiring a little more dexterity would normally mean a little narrower string spacing (ala 17)...I would suggest going out and trying a few in stores...OR using the search feature here on TB and find out what others have to say...

With sixers the necks are gonna be real real important comfort wise. So only good answer imo would be try several and pick from those based on comfort as first thing for neck. ESP ltd and Ibanez would be my choice if was looking to get a sixer. Based on necks and sound etc for me.

correction: Dream Theater ;)
- the Ibanez SR 506 series is a very good start I am pretty sure!

None of these. His price range allows him access to better instruments, especially if he goes used.

Don't get me wrong, I love ESP and Ibanez (esp moreso), but every time a thread comes up like this, everyone always says "ibanez!!!" even if they in no way match the requirements of the OP.

I don't know about Warwicks but I'm certain that new they are expensive and over a grand new :D. I recently bought a Schecter Studio 6 for under $1000 new (including a case. ). This was my first 6 stringer after playing 4's for many years. They are worth checking out as are other makes. Read the reviews and do your homework................

Well how about the Ibanez SR5006E Prestige 6-String Bass Guitar then? Or for bit less spendy, the ESP LTD B-1006 6-String Bass Guitar? Course the Ibanez BTB676 & 776 would be closer to the esp's price point of around a grand.

I'd have to agree with Aspidites. I've owned ibanez, yamaha and mtd entry level sixers and neuser boutique quality one.. Even though for the first time in my life I have to admit to being a bit of fanboy, peavey cirrus is just something else. I consider myself a four string, 70's passive jazz bass kind of guy but lately this 35" inch, active six string is all I have been playing. 1200£ will easily buy you a used one from USA and it will get you an insane amoun of bass for the money. The neuser was better built but the tone just couldn't compete.

ps. aspidites, I just ordered the first pair of Bangka island brongersmai to my country. I know it isn't a big deal over there, but I'm pretty excited.
