help with pots

i need information about pots and capacitors.


i seen pots on guitarcenters site, but they are not labeled "volume" or "tone". do they make a difference?


and what about capacitors, can i just get those from radioshack?


what should i look for when buying these?

you should check out guitarelectronics.com
they have a very extensive list of parts, as well as allparts.com


volume and tone pots are different, volume are audio pots while tone pots are linear (meaning they don't increase with volume as you turn them)


and with the caps it all depends on how you want it to sound, you should look it up on google. they'll have many sites that come up about capacitors and what they do and how they'll sound

thank you for clarifying the pot situation. i have researched the caps, but im still not decided on how i want it to sound. is it possible to find all these parts at guitar center?

The Log scale pots for volume are stamped with an 'A' and the Linear ones for tone have a 'B'.
You can get caps at guitar shops but you'll find them a lot cheaper at an electronics store - should only be about 20c. Just check the value used in a typical guitar (eg Fender) and decide if you want to try a step higher or lower.
Bigger value pots work at a lower frequency, smaller values only cut higher frequencies.
