Double Bass Help with some end pin issues?

Heya, I was just wondering if anybody might be able to give me advice on how to try and fix, or, if that's not possible, just deal with my school bass's end pin. It tends to rattle quite a bit whenever I play it, except for when the endpin is completely inside the bass; then it only happens occasionally. I need about two and a half inches of extra height that the end pin can provide, but if it keeps on making it rattle, well... don't really know.

Any advice?

You probably have a pretty substantial length of endpin still inside the bass when you pull it out to your height. I cut mine off leaving about 6" inside when it's at my playing height. The extra length just adds weight and can vibrate, which is what you're experiencing.

Okay, thanks. And yeah, it's got about a foot and four inches in the bass, I think. As far as adjusting it...I've been told that the end pin shouldn't come out completely, though, so I haven't tried taking it out. Is that a standard thing?

School grade bass endpin rods are usually pinned or crimped on the end inside of the bass so that they will not come out. If the rod is long enough, you can cut it off just below the endpin socket and push the pinned end out inside the bass using the long cut off part. Then retrieve the cut off section through the ff holes. Since it is a school bass, it would be wise to get approval from your orchestra teacher/director before proceeding.
