Help with truss rod- Squier Jazz

I just swapped for a Squier Jazz. The kid had the truss rod completely loosened and bass was strung to pitch! I don't know how long this was set up like this (When I asked why he did that he said the frets would buzz on the high end on the middle 2 strings. I asked if he had tried the saddles and he replied "You should NEVER jack with the saddles... That can really screw up your bass!") So I started turning the rod and tightened it enough to almost get it straight under tension (almost) and thought i would leave it a few days to acclimate and then make a final adjustment. Does this sound good? Should I back it off some and try and sneak up on it over a couple weeks? Should I tighten it untill it's straight and then check again later? Thanks in advance for any sugestions! Casey

There is a set procedure to do a proper setup on a bass. The adjustment of the truss rod, which controls neck bow is just one part of the setup. You need do a complete setup. There are several sites with good tutorials on the process. Use them and learn to do it yourself and do it properly.

Below are two links to some good sites

Thanks Pica, your probably right but I enjoy messing with this stuff and like to keep it at home if at all possible. Thanks for the links, Rocky. I read the tutorials and don't have a problem with setups. I have just never had a neck with the rod completely loose before. I don't think I overtightened the nut (still turns very easy). Just wanted to double check that my plan wasn't going to ruin anything while I let the neck settle in. I've never had to turn one more than just past a 1/4 turn to bring them back, so I was kind of worried about cranking this 3 times around before I even got any tension on it. I will let it set for a week and tune it up and make the final adjustment next weekend. Thanks, Casey

Just thought I'd let everyone know, after a couple weeks this thing plays great! The neck settled in nicely and after a setup I love the way this bass plays. Not too crazy about the sound, but man that Jazz neck is nice! I think I must be more of a P-bass fan. I may just swap this neck onto one. Thanks for the help. Casey
