And it doesn't appear to have been restrung so if he was playing it, he was playing it upside down!

Jimi learned to play the guitar strung both ways. I wouldn't say he was equally adept with either way (low E or high E on top) but he could definitely hold his own regardless of how the instrument was strung. So, he could really play any guitar or bass that he picked up no matter how it was strung.
 
A quick search resulted this also.. pretty cool. Looks like the bass is strung for right handers here also...

That's what I like about Jimi: A lefty who knows better than to play lefty instruments (not sure he really had a choice, but man, why do those people cut themselves off from the vast majority of gear out there?)
