Herbie Flowers

Anyone know much about Herbie . I have a small clip of the making of Walk on the Wild Side by Lou Reed and I love herbie's acoustic and electric bass playing. Other than that I dont know much about the man.

He was a fixture on the UK session scene starting in the late 60s: Bowie, Elton John, Lou Reed, Harry Nilsson, T Rex, Cat Stevens, etc.

Some great stories in Al Kooper's book "Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards" about Herbie's incredible ear and prodigious appetite for hemp.

My favorite Herbie moment: the long gliss on Nilsson's "Jump Into The Fire".

Runner-up: his McCartney-isms on Ian Gomm's "Hold On".

I love his playing, also on love affairs stuff and a tuba player on the lou reed transformer album, let alone the bass playing as stated above, he was our main man on the bottom end thru the 60's and 70's, always come across as mad as you like, but im sure he is well sussed.

Give a listen to David Bowie's "David Live." It's a two CD set recorded in the early-mid 70's. Herbie grooves his @** off. He has some killer chops, yet he's always in the pocket and always tasteful. Bonus: Earl Slick on guitar and a young David Sanborn on sax.
Highly recommended listening (IMHO).
