Hi all, finally got round to joining

I'm not really a bassist, I'm a guitarist. I've only ever had one bass, an Ario Pro ii active. I bought it from the lead guitarist of a band I was in (long story). That was 40 years ago. I stuck with it for so long because despite the weedy pickups it had a very slim neck and a stupidly low action and plays like butter. Just recently the volume started dropping in and out so with gigs coming up I thought I'd treat myself to a new bass. I don't know squat about basses so in my research I kept getting links to this forum. So after weeks of stalking TB from the outside and liking the Intel I was getting I thought it was about time to join in the fun.
I'm not really a bassist but I love playing bass.

Yes indeedy. I managed to blag a 5yr old Fender Player precision complete with a hard case for the princely sum of 450 quid. It was a bit of a basket case though but I could see the potential. Visually it was immaculate but this young chap obviously thought that setting up a bass was a piece of cake. It is if you know what you are doing. The action was high enough to park your car under but the strings were flapping against the fret board in the middle of the neck. I reckoned he had messed around with the truss rod (the place where there be dragons). He'd given up and hadn't played it in over a year. His loss, my good fortune. I gave it to a pro luthier who reset the truss rod, reseated the saddle and nut, slapped on a set of EB hybrid slinky, intonation sorted and it now plays better than a new one. As a side note I haven't touched the truss rod on the Aria since I acquired it 40 years ago, although I did tweak the intonation a few weeks ago. The Aria's volume pot now needs replacing so I took that in to be sorted when I picked up the Fender. The chap in the shop had a quick go on it and was impressed with its playability and concurred that no setup was needed just the v pot replacing.

Hey great, welcome aboard! A few things you'll need after today's orientation are a high pass filter, a set of flat wounds and a tortoise shell pickguard. Also, be sure to drop by the amp section for some kind words regarding mixing 10s and 15s. Those guys are really patient over there and a joy to interact with.

OK, seated and comfy. I do have a few stories for sure. I bought my first guitar at the tender age of 16 (1972). A mate who was an avid Bob Dylan fan taught me a couple of songs, 3 weeks later he said we've got a gig. What???? I only know 4 songs. Don't worry he says, we'll just repeat, they'll all be too p1**Ed to notice. He was right, we got away with it and were paid in beers. Played the folk scene for a while during the 70's. Oh my they were heady days. Then 15 years later joined a band proper and that's when I started my bass journey with the Aria.
