High Pass Filter (HPF) and Low Pass Filter (LPF) Mega Thread

If you want to retain the higher harmonics, you don’t want the LPF.

An external LPF can do a better job than the one in the bass depending on the filter design but it is also additive with the bass tone circuit so they can compliment one another.

Just out of curiosity - when using a pedal like Broughton's HPF+LPF, if you set the LPF at the 20k setting, wouldn't that pretty much be like it wasn't there at all, regarding high frequencies?

Yes, as you said pretty much.

Component tolerances factor into settings. Setting the LPF at the maximum could still potentially limit harmonics. These hamonics can not be heard but they can affect the “quality” or “high end sparkle” of the sound. Or so studies claim.

But let’s not over think this. Use the LPF set to max and enjoy it.

What's the difference between a HPF-LPF and one of these? I had my HPF stolen and replaced it with this... seems to me it has soooo much more versatility. Am I missing anything? Maybe @agedhorse would know.

Slope. Generally graphic EQ have a very shallow slope whereas a dedicated HPF or LPF has a much steeper slope.

Allows you to use so much more of the whole spectrum up to the cutoff frequency.
 
A Fender bass is not the same as a Gibson bass. Both are basses but they perform differently. The same applies to filters, they also perform differently depending on the design and components. A studio filter is not usually the same as a foot pedal based one.

HPF and LPF are generic terms, it’s what’s behind it that counts and sets it apart from a generic EQ.

I also assume that the lowest and highest sliders on the graphic EQ are shelving style, and so affect the lowest and highest frequencies differently than a typical HPF or LPF would.

It keeps the width more narrow as you add more boost, where a “conventional” boost will grow wider.
If you do the math, that's exactly what I said. What your picture shows is what happens when you combine 2 filters at full boost with 1 band of separation between them, which was a supposed selling point. In practice, this application is rarely beneficial because that's not how a graphic eq is used. Myself, I do not care for constant Q eq's in PA applications.
 
Out of interest, I tracked down a test someone did of a Behringer GI100, which is what I have. It seems to have a roll off of about 10dB/octave from 100 Hz. That 's a higher and gentler roll off than an ideal HPF, I'd guess. I 'll check against an Ampeg 8x10, though
