I won a Hipshot Kickass 4 at The Tsunami Bass hang during NAMM. I don’t own any 4 string basses that I wanted to replace the bridge on, so I asked Hipshot if I could exchange it for a 5. They agreed and while I was at it, I ordered some Mini Clover tuners for my MIM Fender Active Deluxe V. It had a nasty dead spot on the 4th fret of the G string, which my repair guys deemed to be Fenderitis lol. Putting slightly heavier gauge (.040-.045) strings helped, but now after changing the bridge and tuners, it’s COMPLETELY GONE. That C# finally rings!!!
I was also able to lower the action much more than before without losing too much sustain. The balance is better of the headstock too. The ability to adjust string spacing is super cool. I went with the steel inserts over the brass.
I also won a set of pickups from Bartolini at the same event. I’ll be dropping in some Classic Dual Coil pickups and an NTMB+F preamp to it very soon.
So now I have a bass that sounds better, looks more like a proper Fender with the Mini Clovers over the Y style Gotohs, and it will be even more aggressive after those Barts get installed. I’m a happy camper right now.
