His name is Tom

So there’s this fella I work with named Tom. He is to this date the most socially inept social person I’ve ever come across. By this I mean he actually talks a great deal; but what tends to come from his mouth makes me want to punch babies.

Example Time:

Remember when Latinos all skipped work about a month ago in protest of the new immigration laws. Well an Indian women I work with came in at 9 like she usually does and Tom goes right up to her and says, “Oh I thought you weren’t coming in today because all immigrants are staying home”. :rollno: Which brought a loud sigh from everyone in the office. He did later apologize for this.

Ten minutes ago Tom and I were talking to one of our bosses and the phone rang. During the first pause of the ring, “The phones ringing.” Oh thanks man, I couldn’t tell by the ringing phone that the phone was ringing. Great, really helped me out there.

Corporates came into the office telling us about a training program in India that the new hires will be going through from now on. During which he referenced America’s idea of India as a garbage heap; and said, “It may be difficult for some of us older people, like Candee”. Candee is a female. How young were you when you were taught to not ask a females age? 4, 5 maybe?

He’s in an awkward hidden relationship with the Chinese girl, which is not hidden to anybody; refering to her as, "a co-worker". Like, a coworker and I went to the movies last night. Come on, just say Anne.

Almost every conversation starts with, “So… (insert conspiracy theory) …ya know?” Honestly, I mean almost every sentence. It follows the format. This is a big one as he tends to slip in totally false and implausible ideas and theories into normal conversation. This just hurts my brain and slows me down.

He’s managed to burn a donut, a stuffed mushroom and 2 or 3 tv dinners in the company microwave. Our office isn’t that big, so when this happens we get the pleasure of sitting in his created stink for the next couple hours.

“Reading is bad”. Yes, he actually said it once.

He’s 30 something and lives at his parent’s house (while maintaining a 50k job).

Peaking around the cube every couple minutes with, “Whats goin on? Whatcha working on? How come I’m not involved?”. Always listening on others conversations.

He comments on everything said, I pretty sure he thinks he’s being ignored or left out when he doesn’t get his comment in.

--------------------------------------------------------

I just needed to rant about this guy. In fact I feel kinda bad about doing it, but you guys are like a support group; and this guy has driven me (and the entire office) nuts for quite some time now. And I understand I don’t know his full story, but come on, there’s some social norms that I thought were pretty universal; like those norms that you can’t even name because they are a part of being human…

Anyone else work with a proverbial Tom?

Hey, man, at least he's not your boss... my employer is a total schmuck who is very occassionally funny so he thinks he's hilarious all the freakin' time.

I actually can't watch the original British version of the Office because it reminds me so much of my boss. I'm am so glad that I'm moving in November.

Until you mentioned the donut, the stuffed mushroom, and the two tv dinners, I was just going to say "Relax man!!"

That stuff is tantamount to murder in my book. No one should have to sit in the moron induced stench of anything burnt via the office microwave..

Especially a donut.. Man, that had to reek..

The company I work for banned microwaving popcorn after fire alarms summoned the fire trucks 3 times in a single month.

Actually in college the dormers would be charged if there wasn't a fire and the fire alarm went off. So it'd be worth it to start a small kitchen fire if the alarm went off because of say popcorn... not that I've done it, but it was a strange situation.

Well, I did go to school with a Yimmers, who is almost exactly as you describe Tom... except that Yimmers would never be able to get a girl to go to the movies with him.

I figure every group needs at least one Yimmers. If nothing else they serve to make the rest of us look cool and well adjusted by comparison. Not to mention the infinite conversation fodder they provide when they're not around.

My name is Tom and I consider myself socially inept. But working a 50k/year job is below even me.

Heh... kidding? (I guess I should put a smiley here or else you all will kill me, huh?)

Nothing good comes out of people who are 30 and live with their parents. I'm surprised he can get a date at all.

How do you burn a donut? It's in the 'wave for what, 15...20 seconds? :rollno:

Hit express without knowing what express is (2 minutes) and go walk back and sit down at the cube. When you see smoke, it should be done.

It was the stuffed mushroom that really reaked though; his girlfriend sometimes cooks fish, fishy fish; thats pretty rough even without getting burned.
