Hofner 500/1 v58

Hey all,
Just picked up a Hofner v58 reissue. Cavern spacing with the black bar pickups. It is in the mail right now, but I was curious if anyone had one. Reviews online are next to impossible to find, so I was just curious how the bass compared to some of the other models in the Hofner lineup.

I certainly will Steve! The only things I could find online regarding the pickups is that they are more focused, with more attack than the other Hofner offerings.

I have one of the prototypes, and it's a great bass. It's more focused sounding than the more common V62/63/64 due to the treble pickup being in the sweet spot instead of pegged to the bridge, whicj tends to be thin and useless, soloed. The neck is pretty much in line with the beefier Cavern ('61) bass. I did switch to Thomastiks, and it's really sweet.

I should add that of all the reissues, I believe it's the rarest. First batch of 58 went to collectors, and an even smaller batch followed. I think around 100 exist worldwide. Been out of production for years.

Thanks for the info! Glad to hear more about its tonal characteristics. I was hoping you would say that there was some real mojo with the “treble” pickup location!

The treble pickup actually sounds great soloed, and has some bark to it. ;-)
