Hofner Staple Pickups

Hello all,
Im new to restoring basses and I wanted to know if a pickup has be attached to the body through a spring system or can it be bolted straight to the body?

This is probably a stupid question but I cant seem to find any information anywhere.

Any help will be hugely appreciated!

Cheers,

Cheers David,
I assumed you could bolt it on how ever you like but better tonal quality might come from different methods.
Thanks for the reply really appreciate it!

Yeah, I mean on a Beatle Bass the pickup is surface mounted. So it;s only the ring holding it to the body.

But you can mount them right to the body if they aren't too far from the strings, and other ways as well.

Mainly you don't want them to be wobbly, get a nice solid mount.

Hi.

On a 183, the neck PU cover tangs are just bent outward and the pickup is held down with the pickguard.
You can obviously solder ears to the bottom plate if You're careful, or fabricate a new bent bottom plate to attach the "staple" onto, and after that you can mount it just the same as any other PU.

Regards
Sam
