Hohner Headless Bass - Do you know the history?

I play a 79 Ibanez MC900 with preamp now and like the boost of sound. Are the selects or factory Hohner's subpar? I don't mind changing the pickups to EMG's if the pickups are available for $100. I didn't want to get a passive bass and be disappointed.
