Holiday Blues

Normally, Im not a depressed person, but get bummed during the holidays..

Maybe its because my parents live out of town, and wont be seeing them. Maybe its because all of my siblings here have their own families now, and quite frankly, Id feel weird being invited to share Xmas with them and their kids. Plus, most of the siblings go to their inlaws anyhow, bc our parents arent in town.

I think the other thing is that we had a pay cut at work, and no one is getting a bonus this year (Xmas party was cancelled too...). So Im not really even in a position to buy gifts, which makes me feel kinda bad.

So Ill be sitting home alone the 25th, and then back to work the 26th. I cant wait for Xmas to go away, so I can go back to feeling normal, and semi happy again.

Yeah, it could possibly be an onset of Seasonal Affective Disorder, but likely not so if it only lasts until Xmas is over, IMO.

Yeah, it's not exactly S.A.D, but I suppose more sunlight would make things a little easier. Oh, and New Years Eve.... Ill be feeling swell by then. Party with the karaoke cousin. Thats always great for a laugh (or a banishment from the bar).

I hear you my friend. I remember (sort of) spending one Christmas in a bar. Everyone there was trying to pretend we were having a great time but underneath it all was a current of sadness.
Please forgive me for making a suggestion, I understand you may just want to have someone hear what is going on. Anyway here is my suggestion. You might try volunteering somewhere there always places that need help, maybe even playing some Christmas tunes for shut-ins or whatever else you like. Just a suggestion I know you have to do what is best for you.

Since I gave up hope, I feel much better. I have learned to tune out the hype and retail frenzy, and try to live as if peace on earth and good will to all humans are 24/7/365, and not just one day of the year. I even torpedoed a promising budding relationship, in early November, when she revealed that she was a major Christmas person. As long as one can live with one's self, then one can be OK.

You know my brother... the people who are the most gung-ho and balls out over Christmas are usually the ones who wouldnt know goodwill and peace on earth 24/7/365 if it came up and bit them on the rear end. A bunch of fake people buying cheap Chinese goods at box stores, supposedly to honor Jesus. Riiiiiight.

And right on torpedoing the relationship. She would have probably wanted you to buy her a crapload of presents.

Presidential election nights (or at least, Obama victories) are not good for my love life. I had a breakup on the same night, in 2008, as well.

You're dead-on about the gung-ho people being fake.

Ha... one of the greatest nights of my love/sex life happened on the night of the Bush victory of 2000 (well, that election night anyhow.... I think the election was decided a month later, if Im not mistaken). Oh wow. Sheesh.. she has 5 kids now by 2 different men, so memories... let em be!

We, too, just went through some austerity measures at work.
It really sucks.

Regardless, you've got to break out of the rut. My kids love it
when their single uncle comes over. He's a nutty guy and he
has a pretty simple formula: he asks them about what they've
been doing, shows interest and probes with more questions.
They love to talk with him and they end up yakking for hours.

This is just an idea for you. Don't write off your siblings so
quickly. You should go hang out and be a part of the extended
family. Don't sit at home dwelling on all the problems of the world.
