Double Bass Home-made EUB stand

I tried to buy an EUB stand but there was nothing in stock in local stores and I couldn't find anything I was confident of buying online. There are some good stands for URB, but I wasn't sure they'd work for an EUB like mine with minimal body.

Anyway, the drummers at my church refurbished the house drumkit last week, and there was a pile of discarded bits in the bin at the end of the day. I scored the bottom half of a broken hi-hat stand and the top half of a rusty cymbal boom stand. With the addition of a few bits from my parts bin, I made this:

At first I tried to just rest the bass on the stand, but it was too heavy and it toppled easily. Then I realised I needed to use the bass's weight to hold the stand down down. A nylon pipe fitting made a neat socket for the end-pin to sit in, and now it's a very solid, stable stand. The neck is supported in a bracket made from a couple of surplus rack ears bolted to the cymbal stand and wrapped in plenty of foam padding. There's a loop of elastic cord holding it in place for now, but I'll eventually add a wide strip of velcro.
Project cost: $0.00, a few bits of junk, a couple of bolts, and a satisfying evening in the workshop!

Cool. I think you've built yourself a Zeta Uprite bass stand, complete with the endpin cup, which they sell for $200! Nice Job!

Well done with bits and pieces too. From the looks of it, you play the EUB standing on the endpin. I have a Dean Pace and use the stand between sets and an fashioned endpin when I play, but I miss the body of the instrument, something to lean against and pull towards me. When I play it on the DP stand, its like dancing with a cement pillar.

yeh, i was never really a fan of those stationary stands for EUB. if you find your left hand hurting then its no good for you.

I don't play it on the stand - I prefer to move around. But to have something to lean against, and to stop the bass rotating in my hands, I've made a body brace - just a curved piece of wood about 6" long that attaches with a bracket, in about the position that the upper bout would be (it wasn't attached to the bass when the pics were taken).

I'm interested in the hardware you used for your endpin. It looks like drum hardware.

Can you tell me what clamp you are using to hold your endpin in place?

What kind of tubing or rod did you use for the endpin itself?

Also, can you post a pic of the bass with the body brace attached?

Does it work well for you?
