home studio advice?

due to my growing family , i'm needing to give up my spare room/home studio , i have a full basement
but living here in washington state it can get kinda cold down there, i'm wondering if you think it would be
safe for my basses to be down there, eventually i'd like to get heat down there but hasnt happen yet
any help appreciated

I live in Texas and was told by the "old" guys if I would not like being left out in the heat, neither would my guitar. In other words don't leave it in the car. Not sure about a cold basement, as we do not have basements here, but you have asked an interesting question.

It will be fine. Assuming your basement is insulated and doesn’t flood or drip condensation off the walls. Not sure how you have no heat down there. Where’s your furnace and hot water tank ?

My studio is in my basement and I haven't had any issues with my equipment. It will get down to 59/60 degrees in the winter and it was at 72 with 100 degree weather outside this week. I usually have the vent closed unless we are practicing, then I will open it up for practice.

Past bands that I have been in have had the studio in the basement and I haven't had an issue with my equipment in their basements either. Hopes this helps!

As you say, you want to get heat in there eventually so I reckon short-term you’ll be fine.

Right now it’s concrete walls and floor and in Washington state in the fall and winter it can get pretty cold down there

Unless you’re talking freezing or near freezing temps, you shouldn’t have any problems. If it’s very damp, that would be a concern.

Until you can get heat can you build a shelf up high in a closet upstairs and store them there? Humidity can warp wood and the cold would probably not be good either. Look for a place to store them upstairs if you can.

cold (by itself: no dampness) only means that you take care to re-acclimate your instruments as common sense dictates.
