Hi Justin I'm just wondering what you use for your home studio setup and if there is anything you recommend particuarly for laying down bass lines on your own once an artists has sent you the songs?

Personally I've been really enjoying working with these digital stand alone multi track hard disk recorders but understand that this isn't ideal when trying to acheive a professional setup.

I'd also like to make the setup as portable as possible.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Anything works! I have ProTools HD only because I need the compatibility, but I really would rather have NOT spent the money. Logic with a cool Apogee interface and a great preamp and DI box will sort you out for less than $3K not including the computer.

Portability wise, you can get that little Apogee interface they do now, that works great with Logic. Or just do a ProTools M-Box with a bundle of software, that's also super affordable and worthwhile.

Right... ya really don't need much to get some great results. I went a little bit further than I wanted to however.. by buying a brand-new Dell PC with plenty of CPU speed, RAM and a fairly large HDD. Then a new Carvin S16 'Studio Mate" USB audio mixer.. The funny part is the recording software: FREE.. a user copy of "Calk Walk" 9.03... So a little bit of gear and software will get you happily recording in no time at all.. Enjoy..'cuz the only limit you'll find are the boundries of your imagination.

My studio is the absolute most pathetic home studio on Talkbass. It consists of a PC running XP, an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 card, an ART Dual MP tube stereo mic pre, a set of AKG headphones, and a handful of instruments and amps (I'm also using an ancient Cakewalk 9.03). But I can put together tracks that you'd swear were put together in a pretty expensive project studio. Nobody will mistake it for a 24-tr. Studer and a Neve board, but I think I could hang with most small digital studios as long as you only need 2 tracks at a time. But since I'm the only person in there, 2 tracks at a time is fine for me.

I'm running a Sonar 4 with an M-Audio Delta 44 on a WinXP pro box (Athlon XP 2200 with 1gb of ram and lots of drives). I've got an early 80s (maybe late 70s) Tascam 6 input / 4 bus mixer on the input side of it... and a mid 70s Sony STR-6800 CD receiver hooked to some Koss bookshelf speakers and an MK sub for playback. I also use one of 3 pairs of cheap cans. I need to get some good ones.

I will attest to the coolness of an Apogee Ensemble and Logic. I have a few friends with this setup and it's incredibly cool for the price. The clock and pres are much nicer than any of Digidesign's LE interfaces (Digi 002, 003, Mbox, etc.), and out of the box, Logic is way more capable than LE (minus audio editing capabilities). I think you can get the total setup - software and interface for around $2,500 which is a great deal, imo.


P.S. - I'm not hating on Digidesign interfaces at all - I own a 002. But, If i were to come across $2,500, I would be tempted to get the Ensemble.

I'm taking this one up now.

So, how is your studio now? At some point in some topic you mentioned you were moving it to a new place. How is it? Still going with HD3? Any comments about Eleven Rack, software/hardware? What DI's and preamps you use/have there, I'm really interested about ones you're using when recording bass tracks.

Too many questions, god I sound annoying.... :scowl:

HD3, yes. Home studio working well. Been tracking drums there and everything. Moved it into Mike Schuppan's house (my tech and engineer), where we have a large drum room, designed control room, small iso, etc. Pretty much a full service scenario. DI's: Radial, REDDI, MXR, Ampeg Pre's: Aurora GT2Q, Chandler LTD1, Api 312, A Designs Pacifica,Eriksson-Montessi EM-Silver, Mackie Onyx, TL Audio. For bass I use whatever's handy, and I like to mix it up a bit. Current fave: direct into EM-silver, Purple MC77, and API 550A.

large drum room! that must be fun...i hate not being able to use real drums without going to a real studio. i'd actually buy decent equipment if i could do that at my house.
