Hot take: Limited Edition Fender

Fender needs to release an American Professional II Precision V as a limited edition with an ebony board, some kind of sparkle finish, and a new 5-string split coil pickup with a vintage voice, something along the lines of the Pure Vintage 63 or even the Custom Shop 62, with a well-balanced bridge pickup.

Like, today.

Make it a gold or silver flake and I’d seriously buy it brand new, unplayed, at whatever crazy list price they’d ask, so long as it feels as nice in my hands as my Dark Night P V.

It’s entirely reasonable for someone to want a Fender, built by Fender, with a Fender warranty, isn’t it?

It absolutely is.
However, the chances are slim that they will come up with what you're asking - and when you want something they don't do, you gotta find a way to make it happen.

Instead of going down the custom route with another brand,
you could get any Fender PJ five string you like and then send it off to a pro for a refinish in the color of your choice.

I agree Fender should come out with a boutique level line. I can see an ebony fingerboard on a neck through design 3-2 head stock, onboard EQ with could taps.

Custom shop, Fender take, is sort of like that. It’s an al a carte. Chose from some options and there you have it.

My son has a couple of custom shop Fenders, but frankly, I don’t find them any better as an instrument than the plain old stock version. They may look better, with upgraded electronic (upgrades you could do with a plain Jane saving yourself $100s of dollars) might sound better, but when the notes start flying on the job, I couldn’t tell the difference.

Just asking. How does the B string become a vintage voice?

When the largest global manufacturer of a commodity product launches a new color of that product it’s not really a limited edition. Still, glitter paint on a bass is cool.
But back to the first sentence, The Largest global manufacturer of anything has a different set of motivations and expectations than their competitors. They’re not trying to sell you 1 of anything.

To be fair, I've been on the internet long enough this means it's either a joke, or someone trying to come off as a joke while laying down a take so blistering that they get banned and likely punched in the mouth in real life. Probably 50/50 either way. Trawling Reddit has really put a damper on the ol spirit, ya know?


But! To the topic at hand:

If SBMMMMMM can release the plain Joe Dirt bass, Fender can do a Sparkle Force 5. Do the whole preorder thing, maybe get someone famous to sign off. Done!

Fender and EBMM are both a bit liberal with their use of the word "custom".

Some higher end shops do special runs in unique finishes with higher-dollar components. Bring it up with wildwood or chicago music exchange for their next special order!
